Mandissa "Love Somebdy" ( 2007 EMI CD)
From a gospel album titled "True Beauty" comes this contempory styled gospel dancer which has an anthemic feel to it, huge dance floor capabilities as the sound is very now, her voice is effortless ad the production is top notch. The rest of the album has its moments too but nothing to compare with this. Sadly those that claim to be into modern contempory soul music have totally ignored this, I wonder why that is.
Kim Askew " Come Fly With Me" (2007 Southpaw Productions CD.)
Currently my top album with so many top cuts its hard to choose a favorite, but this dancer just shades it for me. Her voice echoes shades of Roberta Flack but she's very much a top vocalist in her own right, once again the production is top notch, other notable cuts are "Adore You" "I'll never leave you" and " Love that didnt go my way", but it doesnt stop there, the rest of the album is quite superb too. I cant stop playing this album at the minute.
BLOODSTONE " Now, thats what Im talking about" (2003 Check it Records)
Iv gone back a few years for this gem of a midtempo dancer, I was inspired to go back to this having seen it arrive back in at CD Baby recently, as a new release I was inspired by this track and now, four years later, nothings changed, the album is a joy but this tune is nothing short of a masterpiece. Its very like the Imperial Wonders track we were all championing not so long ago.Great swapping leads, wonderfull harmonies and Cornell Hardy's sax, stunning???.

Im also enjoying the superb Yvonne Yanney " Your kind of loving" off the latest James Taylor Quartet album, a dancer with an Isaac Hayes type production, its one of those dancers that is so unique that it really could go.The Dells " Say you'll stay" from an album titled "Urban Soul Music In The Movies", I'll describe this simply as what you would expect from these guys in ballad mode. Juanita Williams fronting the Fred Hughes Band on a simply breathtaking version of "And Im telling you Im not going", forget Jennifer Hudson as good as that is,this latest version is in another league, I think its on a par with the original.
This months vinyl tip comes curtosy of indie soul man Lee Edwards and his "Prove your love", a tidy downtempo shuffler, from the album "Shades of love" on DT Records. Early 80's I suspect, the album also contains the two sevens that I know of, "Equal love opportunity" and "I Found Love". Always did like his voice, in the upper ranges. One to seek out and enjoy.
cheers

Patrick Henry - Bye Bye Baby from the Contagious CD
Have had a minute long sample of this track for a couple of months now and
knew that when the CD got its release it would make that month's top three.
A classic soul ballad - fabulous.
Sammie Relford - I Been Thinking About You from the Solo Flite CD
A tremendous midtempo piece with a bit of an Al Green feel about it.
J. Diamond Washington - Git Wit It from the Git Wit It CD
This little beauty is a bit of an oldie as it came out in 2005, however I don't
think it is that well known though hopefully that will change - the track is a
tremendous modern soul dancer that in the right hands should become
A monster.
Cheers Steve

Eddie Hubbard /Banbury Soul Club
The Gaslight - Just because of you / It's just like magic [Polydor] USA
Two great sweet sides from this Detroit oufit , dating from 1975 , produced by George McGregor with strings and horns arranged by the incomparable Paul Riser .
Archie Bell and The Drells - I wish / Get it from the bottom [ Atlantic ] USA
Two non - LP sides by Archie Bell , I wish is a great ballad , the flip is a superb version of The Steelers classic outing . Famous names like Wade Marcus , Dave Crawford and Brad Shapiro all feature in the credits .Amazing isn't it , I didn't even know about these sides until last week !!
The Dynamic Soul Machine - Boom - a - rang [ Respect ] USA
Wonderful version of the Sam Dees / Frederick Knight penned song [ also cut by Corey Blake ] ,this 6 piece group version was released by the Stax subsidery Respect , towards the end of Stax , in 1975 , and despite being a number 1 hit in Birmingham , Alabama it never broke in any other cities throughout the USA .First heard this track on Mick O' Donnells " Soul Discovery " show , via Dave Porter .

Micky Gynn / Collector/Part time D.J
Lynda Seals ?Handle with care? (Jamex)
Back to the vinyl this month. A real summer feels to this 2 step
Midtempo tune. Not too expensive to pick up at the moment.
Joseph Cotton ?Day by Day? (Pashlo)
Alas, unlike the above record this 80?s masterpiece is a real tough one
to acquire. Without doubt one best 80?s tracks in my collection.
After a spin on Mick?s show last Nov, Rod Dearlove had numerous calls
So I?m not alone in my thinking.
Visions of a New World ?Children? (New World)
Sounding very much from the late 70?s; the era I started getting into
this type of music. Artists like ?Pleasure? and ?The Blackbyrds? would
usually have outstanding tracks like this on their albums. No idea about the
group or it?s rarity.

Angel - Chaka Khan (Funk This 2007 SMG )
Three in a row from the divas. This is one of the quality cuts from the new Chaka Khan cd. Quality ballad that just builds bringing out the lady's natural vocal talents. This is Chaka revisiting her Rufus days and also features Mary J Blige.A few low points but overall a return to form for Chaka !

Chris Jasper - Invincible -Gold City
Great title track that back in the day well early to mid 90s i would have called a modern dancefloor filler, well it does in my house ,quality gospel cd with not too much preaching if that puts you off and loads of other tracks worthy of play "keep reaching higher" & "I know that you love me" being two
Mashaa' - Love Somebody Else - Anytime, Anyplace, Anywhere - Waylo
From a revamped Waylo label comes willie mitchells latest project this is the killer track for me but also check "all we need" and "is it love" amongst others her voice really grows on you with repeated plays and well worth picking up and should be getting plays
Lee Genesis - Reachout - The Soul Of Lee Genesis - Berger Platters
Vetran of the music industry with both secular and mainstream recordings under his belt and also a house music producer as well but no worries here a straight up soul set is what we have ,the aforementioned "reachout" should be getting played out but the lp is packed full of quality songs and real musicians, real soul its out there go and find it.

Angie Stone - Baby - Hidden Beach - CDS
Mentioning Betty Wright brings me on to this lead single from the new lp from Angie Stone, this killer contemporary groove has both Angie Stone & Betty Wright in top form lets hope this means betty wright will be back soon, should be seeing some dancefloor action this one and looks like Angie Stones new lp is going to be a goodie too.
Lee Starling - The Magic Is Gone - Just Good Music - CDS
The return of Stacy Lane who recorded for excello in the 60s good to hear him here, the production could be better if i was honest but this has a certain charm you will have to dig it out and have a listen for yourself but worth checking.

Chazz Dixon VP Da'Soul Recordings Group, L.L.C.
SHOW ME - Writen because a label mate asked me during a session if I'd
write a song about her using her name (i.e. Carmen Nickerson). I told her
I don't do that. I instead penned SHOW ME.(smile) On a side note: I
first wrote the bass line for this song "J", who plays it on the record,
embellished the hell out of it James Jamerson style. I wanted that Marv
Tarplin feel on the guitar and "J" who also played the guitar solo did it
as if Marv T was riding his Gibson. I've known Marv T for a long time an
"J" does him proud here.
WE CAN FIX THIS - A song assignment from my boss and producer,
Da'Soul Recordings Group president, "J".
SAY IT, SAY IT - I penned this one 25yrs ago. It's been recorded
and re-recorded but this is the first version I've really liked. We do
each song on stage in my show.
